Beyond Strokes Gained: Supplementary Stats Worth Tracking

Strokes gained is the foundation, but several supplementary statistics add valuable context that the four core categories do not fully capture.

Proximity to the hole from various distance ranges tells you about a player’s iron game with specificity that aggregate strokes gained approach cannot match. A player might rank 30th in overall approach but rank 5th in proximity from 175-200 yards. Bogey avoidance is an underrated stat for top-finish betting. Players who avoid bogeys are not necessarily the most exciting picks, but they stay on leaderboards through four rounds by never giving back strokes in bunches. A player ranked in the top 20 for bogey avoidance is a strong candidate for top-10 and top-20 bets because their floor is high even when their ceiling is not spectacular. Par-5 scoring deserves separate attention because par 5s are where scoring variance is highest. Some players consistently convert par 5s into birdie or eagle opportunities, while others play them conservatively and settle for par.
